In the Reign of Terror, a story set in the times of the French Revolution, recounts the adventures of Harry Sandwith, a Westminster boy who is sent to France as a companion to the sons of the Marquis of St. Caux. He accompanies the family to Paris at the height of the crisis, where imprisonment and death reduce their number, and Harry finds himself beset by perils with the three young daughters of the marquis in his charge. After several hairbreadth escapes, they reach Nantes, where the girls are captured and condemned to death in the coffinships, only to be saved at the last moment through the unfailing courage of their boy-protector.
