Adam's father, Roger, is a minstrel, who leaves him for a time at an abbey. When Roger returns for his son the two set off together down the road, but get separated in the search for Adam's dog, Nick, stolen by a rival minstrel. Thus, Adam takes to the road, searching for his father and his dog, making his way in the world with a harp and the minstrel skills he learned from his father.
